The More Things Change...

1/18/2016

Now here's a fun thing! I was recently doing research for a Regency historical romance that will take place in 1816, and I was struck by all the similarities I kept noticing to our current time. I am personally of the belief that, for good or ill, humanity never really changes. Tell me below if you agree or if not, why not? :)

PS: Please let me know if you have any trouble with these flip cards! They were fun to make, but it's my first time making them on Playbuzz. :) These are really just for fun, but if you're looking for an in-depth article on, say, economic conditions of early 19th c. England, this one from the Peel Web will knock you off your chair with the stunning similarities between 1816 and 2016. History may not repeat itself, but as Twain allegedly said, it does rhyme.

Also, I'd like to give a tip of the hat to Nancy Meyer, Regency researcher extraordinaire, who inspired me to do this blog when she shared her list of big events of 1816 with the Beau Monde Regency specialty chapter of RWA (Romance Writers of America). If you love learning about the Regency, definitely bookmark Nancy's site, www.RegencyResearcher.com! This Lady of Distinction knows her stuff! She is THE most knowledge person I know on all things Regency, and her site is a treasure trove.

So here they are ~ a few tidbits from current events of 200 years ago that do seem strangely familiar...

So... What are YOUR Predictions for What 2016 Will Bring?

2016 will show us that people are at times not too bright. Human beings do not always make good choices. And finally that human beings are the most interesting things on this planet.

I love the flip charts! Great way to give a taste for some of the interesting facts of the Regency era. The more things change, the more they are the same, just different!!
Love all the books you have written as they really immerse me in this time in History.

Could I time travel back to 1816 and return after all the election ads are finished this election year?

We probably have just as many weirdos trying to grab power now as then- and with the similar colorful personalities or hairdos. And the weather- is it the same? Does it really just rotate? Whatever- the Regency period was such an interesting period. I feel like there is such a hook there that just reeks me in - the social strata, the fashions, the pageantry. Wow! And look at all of the world events. Your flip cards were very good! My daughter who teaches history would probably love to know how you did those. (Maybe she does...). Karen

Karen, I feel the same way about the Regency. It's such a rich period to write about.

BTW, your daughter could try making flip cards for her students at www.playbuzz.com. It's pretty easy, actually (and it's free to use!)

I had a lot of fun playing around on there and may try a quiz next time! :)

Hope you had great Holidays Gail! You did it again! Your Awesome with your imagination. My thoughts, really, all that is changed is clothes, technology, how we speak, lack of manners! and of course we have media. So, there is still 1816 still around, it is just more elite, the political arena is still as ridiculous as it was back then, and narrow-minded people trying to rule the world only this time around, they actually have major weapons. In todays world, the Kardashian's would be considered from trade, but with all that money and looks and scandal they would've rocked it well in 1816. Can you see it! The only thing I wonder is how would the music of changed back then? Or?

Hi Jacquie! Thanks for visiting! Hope your holidays were good, too. Ours were fun. That is a funny point about the Kardashians. My friend Sarah Maclean's new series sounds like that -- I forget the name but she has dubbed it "Regency TMZ," lol. Something to do with Scandal. It just came out.

Anyway, as to the music, they had Beethoven so... Did you read my Duke of Scandal yet? There's a whole chapter that takes place during an evening house concert. The research was killer, but I learned a lot about Regency music! I think it was Ch. 5.
