Dear Reader ~ How lucky am I? Not only do I get to write novels for the most awesome readers around, but now I get to co-write my first contemporary romance series with one of my favorite people on earth: my sister, Jaz Kennedy.
Picture
Jaz and Gaelen at Kennywood Amusement Park this past summer.
We're the bookends in our family of four girls: I'm the oldest, she's the youngest. I have been bugging her to write fiction for YEARS because I had read nonfiction and essay style work from her over time, and you can just tell when the talent's there. Finally, the time was right for us to dive in on a collaboration, and JUST AS I SUSPECTED (never question your big sister! lol) the project was a great fit for us both. And though we have always been close, working on Harmony Falls together has brought us even closer.

That makes me doubly happy because "family" is one of the main values we're bringing into the series itself, along with a lot of Foley-girl humor and, of course, the tearjerker moments. It would hardly be a romance without 'em! Oh, yes--and the steamy bits...but I think I'm officially in charge of those. *g*

I invite you to stop by Jaz's website to learn more about her background, but in the meanwhile, I wanted Jaz to do the honors of telling you guys more about the SETTING for our Harmony Falls series.
Picture
It's near and dear to our hearts, not the least because it's right in our own back yard here in Pennsylvania! You know what they say: Write what you know. Not so easy to do with Regency romances or Victorian children's fantasy adventures, to say nothing of medieval fantasy romance, lol!

But that's why I needed Jaz to do this project with me, ya see. Because while I've had my head in the clouds in wondrous worlds of long-ago-and-far-away, knights and castles, pirates, and dukes and ballrooms, Jaz has had both feet firmly planted in the here and now.

It's proved to be a good balance, because while I had all these story ideas full of warmth and humor and wonderful characters tugging at my heart, the modern world is not so much my thing, whereas my sister has already got a strong, well-developed contemporary voice. Put that together and, oh, geez, all I can say is that I think my literary idols, the Bronte sisters, would've at least given us big, sister-writer high-fives. Oh, let me shut up already. *g* I'm just excited.

Folks: here's Jaz to tell you about the world of Harmony Falls with a glimpse of all the attractions year round. But don't forget to VOTE at the end & leave a comment for a chance to win an autographed copy of DREAM OF ME (Harmony Falls, Book 1)

Rugged peaks, moss-covered boulders, towering firs, roaring whitewater…

Welcome to the Laurel Highlands!

Picture
Gael and I are thrilled to introduce you to this majestic slice of Western Pennsylvania. It’s the backdrop for our sexy small-town contemporary romance series, Harmony Falls, and I know you’re going to fall in love with the place just as much as we have.

With farmlands snuggling into valleys, rivers gushing through meadows, luxury resorts, ski slopes, and golf courses stretching across rocky peaks, and brewpubs, wineries, little museums and antique shops lining the streets of its charming villages, this 200-square-mile swath of the Allegheny Mountains is teeming with romantic possibilities.

It’s no wonder that only the spunkiest gals and hunkiest guys – living out their wildest passions – call the Laurel Highlands area home!  After all, Harmony Falls – a small mountain town on the banks of the fictitious Onatah River right in the middle of the Laurel Highlands – is fast becoming THE outdoor mecca for the region’s most daring thrill seekers.

You’ll love the locals – like Patrick Finn, the buff, fearless outdoor guru and owner of Get Lost, the adventure outfitter's in town. Then there's Jack Brand, the rugged ex-Marine who finished his last tour of duty and decided to open his own pub and microbrewery. The Knickpoint has become the town's go-to social hub. And let's not forget Mike Walker, the laid-back, all-American town sheriff. Let's just say you'll hope you get pulled over when you're there. ;)

But just wait til you see what happens when rebellious loners, powerful business travelers, and mysterious strangers roll into town!

With that in mind, we need your help!

There’s so much to do and see in the Laurel Highlands all year long, we just can’t decide which season is the sexiest!

Help us choose which season you think makes for the steamiest weekend getaway with your Valentine. Imagine you’re packing up for a romantic escape with your sweetie to the Laurel Highlands...

Check out the following itineraries we’ve come up with – there’s one for every season. Think long and hard about what season of passionate adventure you’d choose, then cast your vote below!

Ready? Here goes! :)

Winter

Your slope-side chalet at Seven Springs or Hidden Valley awaits! Sun-kissed, snow-capped peaks make for a refreshing start to your winter wonderland jaunt. Snowboard, snow-tube, cross-country or downhill ski all day, and when your legs give out, snuggle up tight to your hero on horse-drawn sleigh ride through the forest.

Have dinner and a glass of champagne by the fire at the lodge, and later, take a dip in your private outdoor Jacuzzi under the stars, even as the snowflakes settle gently around you. Cap off your dreamy weekend with a rejuvenating couple’s massage at one of the region’s exquisite wellness spas.

Spring

As wildflowers burst open and baby bunnies are born, spend a leisurely morning strolling in and out of antiques stores. Don’t miss a tour at one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s amazing architectural destinations – Fallingwater or Kentuck Knob.

Then have coffee and lunch at a charming diner before heading off to Laurel Hill State Park. A hike to the waterfall, a kiss under the tunnel of blooming mountain laurel, and a glass of wine on a blanket at the sandy lake’s beach are sure to make your weekend sizzle!

Settle in for the night at a Victorian-era B&B, and gear up the next morning for adventure: you’ll explore moss-covered boulders and sheer cliffs when you take a rock climbing course!

Once you’ve perfected your top-roping skills, you and your honey can brag about the day’s feats on this seven-stop winery tour through Laurel Highlands wine country.

Summer

PicturePhoto: LaurelHighlands.com
Ahh, the scent of pine needles baking in the hot sun. Water cascading down a gentle slope. Red-tailed hawks circling overhead...

Begin your summertime getaway at the water’s edge in Ohiopyle. Take in the roar of the falls until you’re lulled into relaxation. Then, plunge down the Youghiogheny River over Class V rapids in a raft or kayak!

Once you and your date survive that together, treat yourselves to a microbrew and some lunch at one of the local pubs.

Next, hop on a bike and glide among the ferns in the shade along the Great Allegheny Passage, then don’t miss a thrilling zip down the natural water slides! After sunset, snuggle up in a sleeping bag, because rustic chic is the only way to go in the Laurel Highlands during summer.

“But camping is so 2015,” you might say. Don’t worry! You’ll glam it up in one of these über-cool glamping huts, or backpack your way to a lean-to along the beautiful Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. After all, this is what the Hotties of Harmony Falls do almost every weekend!

Autumn

Start off easy on this fall foliage trip along one of these historic heritage routes through the mountains. While fiery sugar maples and burnt-orange oaks surround you, don’t forget to stop and sip the cider at one of the many harvest festivals in the area!

Take a hayride through a pumpkin patch on a picturesque farm with your sweetie, indulge in some spiced nuts or kettle corn, quench your thirst with a microbrew, and then delve deep underground to explore the breathtaking Laurel Caverns. Just beware of the bats!

Retire to your luxury spa resort for a massage and a five-star dinner. Rest up, because tomorrow you’ll be gliding over brilliant treetops and wildflower meadows on one of the region’s zip-line tours! Finish off your cozy autumn excursion with a history lesson at Fort Ligonier to learn how George Washington and his men battled for freedom on the frontier, and post a couple's selfie alongside history re-enactors in Colonial dress. Sound fun? We think so, too!

Winter would be best. Walks through the deep snow, and after your toes get too cold, a trip inside to warm yourselves by the fire and sip brandy. A large snowstorm to watch out the window would certainly top off a wonderful day. Oh my, I forgot a tasty gourmet dinner worked into the day...somewhere!!

So nice to meet you, Jaz! Gaelen, I have enjoyed all of your books and look forward to reading the next one in The Laurel Highlands. I chose winter as the most romantic season. I'm originally from the Midwest, but have lived in the South for many years now. Getting away to a cabin in the woods, with snow softly falling and a roaring fireplace, sounds wonderful---especially knowing our Southern high temperatures are just around the corner. Best wishes on this new series and I'm happy the two of you have this opportunity to work together! --- Suzanne

Hi Suzanne! It's wonderful to hear you've enjoyed my books. Thanks for reading them! I can understand missing the snow when you live down South. It'll almost be wisteria season down there, as I recall from my days of living in S. Carolina. Of course it was more the azaleas in Georgia. *g* Such beautiful gardens down there.

BTW, we did get a lovely snowfall here today. Well - I say lovely cuz Eric's the one that has to shovel it. *g*

Having survived another band of "lake effect snow" today, warm thoughts of summer are very tempting. Living (and Loving) in Northwest Pennsylvania, with the winters so very long, we really take advantage of our short summer months. Both retired now, Hubby and I enjoy our lazy days reading, playing in the flower beds, and searching for local outdoor eating venues. Very low key, but we love our quiet life !!

Oh my goodness, Sheila, you're in Lake Effect country! I went to college up that way, at Fredonia. I feel your pain!! lol. Summer is beautiful, though. Plus all that cold kills off the huge bugs like they have down South.

Before I forget - I'm sure you've heard of and read Holly Jacobs, right?? She's a wonderful romance author (and friend of mine!) who lives in Erie and writes books set around there. Funny and touching romances and women's fiction.

I have always loved winter: snow falling, fireplaces blazing, hot chocolate, snowmen, sleigh rides, snuggling under a fleecy throw, reading romances. In fact, winter is one reason I have no desire to leave South Dakota. Winters can be hard, but they are so beautiful and snow imparts a peace that can't be found at any other time.

Thank you, Jaz & Gaelen, for the contest. Your lovely descriptions made my choice difficult. And welcome, Jaz! I look forward to your joint creations.

Oh, so you're a Western girl! I didn't know that! :) Thanks for coming to my blog.

I gotta say, I'm so impressed with all the people saying winter. You make good points, but it's nice to see so many appreciating the "now" rather than being like I was (really badly) in Oct-Nov, dreading the winter and trying to figure out how to escape the coldest months.

I didn't manage to find a way to make it happen and stayed here in PA all season, but it wasn't anywhere near as bad as I'd worried it would be. In fact, it's been quite mild and rather pleasant, in all.

Winter's a good season for writing because it's cozy to just stay inside and think up stories, just like reading them! :)

Oh gee, I could not make up my mind about which would be the most romantic time between Winter & Autumn. I think being cosy & warm with hot chocolate at the ready, a delicious roast in the oven, a warming Scotch before some delectable wine at dinner would fit either of these seasons to perfection but a snowy night would just top all that so it's Winter for me!!
Yes, summer is here in Oz & we have had a couple of scorching hot days/nights - not so romantic as you try to keep cool.

Hey Karen! I saw your pics on FB earlier this year -- can't fool me! I know you were playing on the beach at Laurel Mtn State Park:)) How fun, that climby thing! When you read Dream of Me, you'll know when you get to the part where that lake was in my mind's eye...

Fall. All things fall. The colors, the clothes, the feel. A long drive through the woods to see all the colors and a pit stop for some quality time sounds like the best way to spend a weekend. :)

And the leaves were indeed brilliant this year, Jenn:) And sooo many festivals, sooo many pumpkins!

I'd say Winter. For a few weeks out of the year, people seem to be nicer for a little while during the holidays!

So true, Linda! Do you get many 'snow angels' in your area helping to shovel and so forth? Snowfall brings people together:)

Fall - not to hot or cold - usually milder temps so easier to 'do' things without getting 'dewy', which isn't romantic! Plus the crisper air and fall colors. Nothing like a romp through the fallen leaves!

Winter - coming inside after a day in the crisp cold air and cuddling with my man by the fire with wine. It doesn't get any better than that!

Normally I like the weather of Spring the best for Western PA. It doesn't have the heat or humidity of Summer, or the Black Ice of Winter. Or the rains of the Fall season. BUT... I liked best the activities you chose for the Fall season, so that's the one I chose.

Pam, you're so right. Fall can be soooo rainy and gray. Gotta take advantage of those crisp blue skies filled with sunshine when we got em!

I think Fall is so romantic with the changing colors and weather that is still warm enough for being outside during the day. The cool nights are perfect for cuddling.

I chose Spring. I love the outdoors! I love hiking and always wanted to try rock climbing other than the indoor kind. I wanted to choose all 4. You described them so well I wanted to experience all of them.

Hey Teneille! I'm with you...When the mountain laurel blooms in spring, it's spectacular. There's this section of trail in Laurel Mtn State Park where the dark shiny leaves+huge white and pink flowers form a tunnel right over the trail. Makes you feel like a magical wee fairy! One of my fave all time walks!

Long hikes over crunchy fallen leaves, wearing soft, fuzzy wool sweaters. Chilly, sexy nights in front of a warm fireplace. Autumn is definitely the best season

Winter is the best time of the year with all the beauty and serenity of being snowed in in some warm and cozy cottage high up in the mountains with a warm fireplace so I can relax and knit.

Winter gets my vote. Summer here in the South is unrelenting heat and humidity, while Winter brings variety. Saturday here in North Texas will have temps. in the 70s, Sunday's high will be in the 30s. My husband and I also enjoy Winter vacations to snowy climes. Looking forward to the new series.

Autumn gets my vote. The smells, colors and falling leaves. What's more romantic than taking walks holding hands, falling down in the leaves kissing, baking with your windows up and sitting outside looking at the stars at night. Perfection.

I love Autumn! Beautiful foliage, crisp cool air, harvest's bounty, and relaxing by the outdoor fire put all make me happy and thankful for my many blessings. It's no wonder my husband of 20+ years proposed on such a night. 😀 Congratulations Gaelen and Jaz on the new series! Sounds like it will be as great in its own way as Gaelen's historical series.

I love all the season, Summer and Winter the best. As I have a very large yard and grow roses. Winter cause I do all kinds of crafts and living in CO the cold weather gives me cause to stay in,. I love reading and read over 200 books a year. Gaelen is a new author for me and love all the books I have read so far.
Can't wait to start the new series. It's just wonderful to see sisters doing stuff together. My sister was 12 years older and we missed a lot of time but was able to spend the last three years
getting to know each other before she passed away.
Good Luck and Merry Christmas

Having never seen snow in life, winter is something that I have always fantasised about. What's more hot than snuggling near the fireplace and chilling in the jacuzzi..?
While all the seasons have their beauty, winter is the most romantic for me.
Maybe because it sounds like an adventure compared to Bangalore weather. But sharing a fluffy blanket and scorching kisses with my boyfriend in a nice winter cabin trumps all to me..!

PS: I love all your work Gaelen...!! I'm super excited about your debut in this genre. But don't stop writing Historical.. I miss the Inferno Club Hotties..!!
My Scandalous Viscount is my all time favourite..
Please consider writing a spin off for them.. I love all of them..!!!

Eeeeeek! Vijetha! Thank you so much for writing...all the way from Bangalore! Winter sure can be dazzling..*BUT* what we don't tell you is all the yucky bits about having to wear three layers of everything all the time, or scraping ice off our cars for 20 minutes before you can go anywhere, or falling on the ice and getting hurt because someone didn't shovel! But those weekend getaways to the mountains with a roaring fire make it all worth it:)) I have a feeling you are gonna LOVE some of the sexy heroes living in Harmony Falls... can't wait for you to meet them! All the best, Vijetha!

My choice was spring, it's my favorite season anyway. I love the smell of rain, trees getting their leaves, flowers blooming. Everything turning green. Winter is just an ugly brown unless there is snow and I don't really like snow or the cold either.
